Were Cyclist Talk about Climbing Double Peak

In the Early Summer of 2009 the road to the top of Double Peak in San Elijo was completed. Since then local cyclists have been using the Twin Oaks / Double Peak roads to get their local hill training in. This Blog was started to share our times, experience and otherwise trash each other regarding our up and down adventure

Brian K and Mike T

This idea started with Brian K and Mike T discussion their times for riding up to Double Peak from each side of Twin Oaks. Mike starting from San Elijo and Brian starting from CSSM.
Times:
Twin Oaks Blvd to Parking lot on top of Double Peak
Mike T - 7:02

San Elijo and Melrose to top of Double Peak
Brian K - 18:21

So where are the Start / Stop points? Obviously the Stop is the top of Double Peak. But where do the climbs start....

Let the records begin

  1. In the busy village of San Elijo Hills "SEH", just east of and behind La Costa is the challenging hill workout becoming known as Double Peak "DP". This is actually a variation of the San Elijo to San Marcos - Twin Oaks Valley Rd climb which is itself a 6+% grade. DP is a side road near the top/West side of Twin Oaks. To find DP turn left at the stop light, and follow it up through the gate which is open during the day until about 5:00 PM. The road curves right and the grade increases here to about 8-10% for 200 yards then increases to 12-14% for another 100 yards past the water tower. The road then levels off as you now crest the top at the newly constructed ranger station. The view from here is spectacular, especially about sunset.

The Twin Oaks/DP climb can be done with many variations depending on your training goals and fitness level or pain threshold. The basic climb goes up from the west side and continues down the San Marcos side. For a shorter version, just up to the last stop light at the top before the fire station and U turn back down to town.

The real deal starts in town at Schoolhouse Way, up to DP, down to the San Marcos side, back up again to DP, then back down to San Elijo side. For those who can't get enough (Chance, Roger, Rick, Andy, Brett, Jen, etc. And you know who you are :) doing 3-4 of these is a serious workout that will trash your whole body the first time you do it hard.

For the longest version of this workout begin at San Elijo Rd and Melrose. This section is 2-4% grade and adds about 10 minutes to the ride.

On any early morning or late afternoon you are likely to see a few riders there. Thursdays have become the busiest day. About 5:00 PM a small group of Swami's riders and other locals begin to swarm for their weekly pain ritual.

Double Peak repeats, along with a few other well planned workouts is enough to keep anyone fit for racing.
